Zadie Smith wins Austrian State Prize for European Literature
We are proud to announce that Zadie Smith has won the 2018 Austrian State Prize for European Literature (“Österreichischer Staatspreis für Europäische Literatur”).
Austrian Cultrure Minister Gernot Blümel (ÖVP) says the writer "has sharpened our awareness of the ethnic, social and cultural polyphony of our world by asking in her novels the question of origin and identity" in her literary oeuvre so far.
The prize, worth €25,000, will be awarded in Salzburg on 27th July.
Previous winners include Karl Ove Knausgård, Patrick Modiano, Ljudmila Ulitzkaja and Javier Marias.
