Margarita García Robayo wins the Premio Herralde 2026
Margarita García Robayo's new novel Dear Sharik has won the 44th Premio Herralde today in Barcelona, and is being published immediately by Anagrama.
The prize is named after the founder of Anagrama, Jorge Herralde, and has been awarded annually by the publishing house since 1983 to encourage and promote Spanish and Latin American literature. Over 2,000 novels were entered for the prize this year, and we are so delighted that Margarita’s beautiful novel won.
Dear Sharik is a fierce and luminous novel about family and genealogy written in epistolary form; deeply human and subtle.
The judges said:
‘Dear Sharik indomitably explores power dynamics while we follow the trail from ‘a little bundle of chromosomes’, through these eccentric and brilliant pages. They evoke a family saga, a dystopia, an erotic epistolary novel, but above all, they highlight in their savage humour, their audacity, their sharpness, the extreme love for the characters and that originality of form essential for telling what had not been told and it stings. It stings a lot.’ – Marta Sanz
‘Irreverent and hugely intelligent, with a quirky perspective, just the right amount of irony and self-parody, and a keen sensitivity for identifying the conflicts of our time, Dear Sharik narrates a failed family holiday that turns into a woman’s journey towards finding her genetic origins and a journey of an apocalyptic nature. A novel that is also a letter about the absurdity of our racial prejudices and the involuntary humour of our desires’ – Juan Pablo Villalobos
